Introduction
|
This section of Freebyte! is devoted
to free Webspace providers - sites which give away free homepages.
Of course there are practical limitations on the size of
your site. This can range from 100 Kb, 10 Mb, 100 Mb to the theoretical 'unlimited'.
Some free sites even offer you to upload your own CGI scripts. CGI is a way of
dynamically creating HTML pages or gathering information using scripts which are
executed on the Web-server.
Sites which offer CGI (meaning you can write your own PHP, Perl, ASP, etc. scripts)
get the CGI logo: 
Sites which do not display banners or advertisements on YOUR homepage

Warning: not all sites will continue their service indefinitely.
Many sites are displaying annoying popup Windows for advertisement, some sites are
very slow or have severe limitations in several areas.
You should be aware that on most sites there are practical limits, like
traffic limits, commercial limits or content limits. Carefully read the
site's policies / licence agreement page if you're not sure.

|
We signed up for a 'Commerce PRO' package with GlobAt in the first part of August 2003. This package certainly looks tempting with features like:
100 Gb data transfer, 2 Gb Webspace, $ 29.95 per month, $ 49.95 setup fee, 15-day money-back guarantee.
After signing up we experienced nothing but delays and complications.
(1) It took 8 days for the account to get activated.
(2) Then almost another week for other details to get straightened out.
(3) Finally we gave up and requested back the fee (quarterly fee including setup costs totalling $ 139.80) just within the 15-day period.
(4) It took them another 3 days to respond with: you have to officially request cancellation through an online form.
(5) We filled in the form
(6) But then they said that the 15-day period was over and it is not their policy to refund outside the 15-day trial period.
$ 139.80 down the drain? To us it looks like they are using their own delays to justify refusing the refund.

Web forwarding

Web forwarding services do not host your homepage, but allow you to have a second
shorter (and easy to remember) address for that page. To join such a service, you already need to have
an existing home page.

does not accept registrations of domains if there is no DNS server pointing to your domain name
and if your domain name is not connected to the bare internet address of some Webspace provider.
Using a domain 'parking' service gets around this problem.
Domain Parking allows you to register your domain name without having to publish
or pay for a website. You only pay the standard fee for the domain registration.
